3G Voice Minutes Continue to Decline as VoLTE-capable iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Phones Increase Market Share
TrueCall® data shows further drop in 3G voice minutes across VoLTE-enabled iOS devices with iPhone 6 users making ¼ of calls on 3G compared to older iPhone models
BERKELEY, Calif. – Feb. 25, 2015 – Tektronix Communications and its wholly owned company Newfield Wireless reveal 3G voice calling has dropped considerably on iOS devices four months after the launch of the Voice over LTE (VoLTE) enabled iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
The LTE-network data analysis has revealed 3G voice calling among iPhone 6 users is now 1/4 of that on previous iPhone models as a result of VoLTE adoption since the October 2014 launch of the two new smartphones. The same data show iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus accounted for 25 percent of all iPhone models in use.
The analysis is based on data generated by the TrueCall® platform, which is uniquely positioned in the network to provide the visibility and real-time information needed to assess the delivery and performance of VoLTE. The release of this new data follows on from the November 2014 announcement of a sharp drop in 3G voice calling on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices just two weeks after they first became available in the market.
Not all mobile networks are configured to support VoLTE calls, so the majority of voice calls made on other 4G-enabled devices are still routed through legacy 2G and 3G networks. iPhone 6 devices are VoLTE-compatible and have driven the recent increase in the number of VoLTE calls.
Marc Bensadoun, VP Tektronix Communications’ Radio Access Network Business Unit, explained: “Since the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in September 3G voice calls made on iOS devices across U.S. networks have declined. This is attributable to iPhone 6 users taking advantage of VoLTE. Sales of iPhone 6 devices are increasing rapidly, four months on and they account for two in three of all new iOS devices coming onto the market. We anticipate this trend to continue as more VoLTE compatible devices become available.”
